SRFTI Students Demand Vice-Chancellor’s Resignation Over Campus Violence

SRFTI students have demanded Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera’s resignation over alleged campus violence on September 27 and October 4. Their indefinite protest highlights accusations of administrative inaction, weakened police complaints and threats of disciplinary action.

Students of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) have accused Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera of failing to ensure their safety and demanded his resignation as they continue an indefinite sit-in protest against violence on campus. Wednesday marked the third day of their protest.

In a statement issued on October 13, the SRFTI Students’ Union alleged that institute authorities failed to take adequate steps to prevent violence on October 4, despite receiving prior warnings about the possibility of such an incident.

The students also accused the authorities of weakening police complaints, threatening disciplinary action against protesters and refusing to engage in meaningful discussions with them.

According to the allegations, SRFTI students were attacked in two separate incidents of violence on September 27 and October 4. The students further alleged that some institute employees misbehaved with them on October 5 and 6 while they were staging a sit-in protest at the office of Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera.

The students’ indefinite protest centres on allegations of campus violence, concerns over their safety and the institute administration’s response to the incidents. Their demand for the Vice-Chancellor’s resignation adds to the ongoing confrontation between the students and the institute authorities.
